My research activity is within the ALICE experiment. It studies the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities, where the formation of a new phase of matter, the quark-gluon plasma, is expected. I am a member of the ALICE Collaboration since May 2007.

Working Experience:
  • 15/04/2011 - present: Postdoctoral Fellowship at NIKHEF, Amterdam, The Netherlands
Education:
  • 21/02/2011: PhD in Physics. University of Turin, Turin (Italy).
  • Title of the Thesis: Performance of the ALICE Zero Degree Calorimeters in proton-proton collisions
  • 24/09/2007: Master Degree in Physics of Fundamental Interactions. Department of Physics, University of Turin, Turin (Italy). Title of the Thesis: Messa a punto finale dei Calorimetri a Zero Gradi per l'esperimento ALICE (.pdf). Score of 110/110 cum Laude.
Summary of my activities
Research activities during the Postdoctoral fellowship:
  • I focused on the study of heavy-flavour particles. I developed the software framework and the detection strategy. I studied the D*+ production in nucleus-nucleus (First world measurement of the D meson azimuthal anisotropy) and proton-nucleus interactions(first measurement of D meson nuclear modification factor in proton-nucleus collisions).
  • I am involved in the operation of the ALICE Inner Tracking System (ITS). I was one of the “ITS Experts” based at CERN assuring the maintenance of the system and a prompt intervention in case of failures. I have been the “System Run Coordinator” for the ITS.
  • I am involved in the studies for the ALICE Inner Tracking System Upgrade, a project aiming to improve the physics performance of ALICE. I studied the performance for D meson reconstruction with the upgraded ITS.
Research activities during the PhD:
  • I have been involved in the commissioning and calibration of the Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC). The ZDCs provide the centrality trigger of the collision through the detection of the zero degree energy. I optimized the software for the detector response simulation and the algorithms for the offline analysis of the ZDC data. I participated in the analysis of the first data collected. Between April and December 2010 I have been based at CERN as Expert of the ZDC subsystem assuring the maintenance of the system and a prompt intervention in case of failures.
  • I studied the possibility of identify diffractive events in proton-proton collisions at LHC using ZDCs.
  • I implemented the Detector Control System (DCS) for the ZDCs.
